Under the Toyota-Suzuki global partnership for vehicle platform and technology sharing, Toyota has launched rebadged versions of the Maruti Suzuki cars in India. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Taisor and Glanza are basically rebadged iterations of Maruti Suzuki’s popular models Grand Vitara, Fronx and Baleno, respectively. Now, with the Victoris launching, we may see a rebadged version of this compact SUV from Toyota. However, it is still uncertain whether Toyota will introduce its own version of the Victoris. If launched, the Toyota counterpart would slot between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Taisor.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris comes with a design philosophy that takes inspiration from the Grand Vitara. The headlamp design, as well as the LED daytime running light styling too seems directly influenced by the Grand Vitara.

The new Maruti Suzuki SUV’s nomenclature remained a mystery for us. While there were speculations that it would be christened as Escudo, some claimed the name would be Victoris, as the auto OEM filed patent for both the names. However, the name is confirmed now as Maruti Suzuki Victoris.

The launch timeline of Maruti Suzuki Victoris is strategic. The new Maruti Suzuki SUV launch is taking place at a time when the festive season is knocking on the door. The festive season has traditionally been the most prosperous time of the year for any automaker, owing to the positive consumer sentiment. During this period, all the automakers across segments register a sales surge. Maruti Suzuki is aiming to encash that, along with capitalizing on the rend of high demand for SUVs.

The spy shots of the new Maruti Suzuki SUV’s test mules, which would be christened as Escudo or Victoris, hint that the SUV is longer than the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. There is a speculation that this new Maruti Suzuki SUV will come with a three-row version. If the new Maruti Suzuki SUV is offered with a seven-seat layout, it would clearly stand apart from both the Brezza and the Grand Vitara.

Despite being influenced by the Grand Vitara, which is sold through the NEXA network, the new Maruti Suzuki SUV will be sold through the Arena retail chain. With this strategy, Maruti Suzuki plans to reach more people by selling it via the Arena network. With over 3,000 dealers spread across big cities, smaller towns, and rural areas, the SUV will be far more accessible to a wider range of consumers.

It is not going to be an easy task for Maruti Suzuki’s new SUV. The upcoming SUV will give buyers a more spacious option than the Maruti Suzuki Brezza while keeping pricing more accessible than the Grand Vitara. However, there will be a lot of competition for the SUV. Besides the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the SUV will also compete with rivals like the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.

Maruti Suzuki’s utility vehicle lineup is already quite strong, with SUVs like the Brezza, Grand Vitara, Fronx and Jimny, while in the MPV segment, it has models like the Invicto, Ertiga, and XL6. With the arrival of the Escudo, the count will go up to seven utility vehicles for the auto OEM, which will certainly help the brand to further strengthen its grip in the Indian PV market.

The taillight design of the new SUV teased by Maruti Suzuki showcases a 3D look along with a sleek brake lamp. The brake lamp is flanked by the turn indicators. The shape of the tail lamp at first glance resembles that of the new generation Maruti Suzuki Swift, but it appears as a much more stylish version of that.

The upcoming SUV by the Indian carmaker is an effort towards expanding its market share in the country in the mass market SUV segment. This new SUV is expected to be based on the current Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, it would most likely be positioned between the Grand Vitara and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza in the OEM’s portfolio. Maruti Suzuki is aiming to bring in a product appealing to a much wider audience. SUVs have replaced small cars and become the leading revenue churners for the auto OEMs in the country at large. Maruti Suzuki is no different, and it aims to capitalise on this trend. This is why, the company is introducing this new SUV.

Under the hood, Maruti Suzuki could equip the Escudo or Victoris with its familiar mild-hybrid petrol engine. Also, there could be a CNG option with a new dual-cylinder setup, and a 1.5-litre strong-hybrid mill would be there as well. Interestingly, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara already comes with the hybrid setup. The 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine would be available with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic unit as an option. The 1.5-litre strong hybrid engine would get an e-CVT, while the 1.5-litre petrol+CNG powertrain would come with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

On the safety side, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki SUV is expected to come packing a plethora of safety features. It is expected to come equipped with six airbags as standard, ABS, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a 360-degree surround view camera, and even an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite as well.

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki compact SUV will come drawing design inspiration from the Grand Vitara. However, there would be distinctive elements as well. Unlike the Grand Vitara, it would sport less curves and creases and claddings.

Maruti Suzuki Escudo or Victoris would come with an upmarket cabin. It will debut with a fresh dashboard layout and a larger floating touchscreen infotainment system, as the spy shots suggested. Feature highlights could include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a premium Arkamys-tuned sound system, and a fully digital driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats.

The Maruti Suzuki Escudo or Victoris, whatever nomenclature the new SUV takes, is expected to borrow design inspiration from the Grand Vitara. Spy shots of the test mule of this SUV suggest that it will come with an upright stance and a cleaner look with less body cladding. Which means it will have a smoother profile than the Grand Vitara, eventually helping in aerodynamics. Expect it to come slightly larger than the Grand Vitara, have two rows of seating inside the cabin. The SUV is also likely to receive new design alloy wheels and sleeker LED lighting elements at the front and rear, which will help it stand apart from its bigger sibling.

Maruti Suzuki is all set to give the Indian compact SUV segment a major boost with the launch of its latest model, which would be christened as Escudo or Victoris. Slated to go on sale via the Maruti Suzuki Arena dealerships, the new SUV will challenge rivals such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
