New car sales in August saw a surge in sales from Chinese brands intent on building share in the UK market.
New Chinese entrant Omoda turned in the strongest performance in terms of increased sales delivering 1,085 units for the month, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders.
BYD also turned in a positive month with a 302% increase in sales to 1,759 units.
MINI saw sales accelerate 143.3% to 1,759 units while Geely-owned Polestar saw sales rise 95% to 729 units for the month.
Cupra saw sales rise 33% to 1,941 units, Peugeot was up 19.1% to 3,814 and BMW 13.9% to 5,200.
August is generally the smallest sales month of the ahead of the September plate-change which accounts for one in seven annual registrations.
While some dealer networks found the going good, others struggled. At the bottom of the table were smart, Genesis, Fiat, DS and Abarth with low unit sales and sales down over 50%. SEAT sales fell 52.5% to 1,072 units; Suzuki was down 47.5% to 786 and Mazda -41.6% to 620 units.
Overall, the new car market declined -2% in August to 82,908 units.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “August was the best month yet this year for EV market share and, while it is often volatile due to low overall volumes, the overall trend is positive.”
