Most people know cars need fuel, servicing, and insurance but few realize modern vehicles also store sensitive personal data. Today’s connected cars record routes, vehicle health, app pairings, and driver details to support their features. This information is managed across company servers, cloud platforms, and partner networks, often without drivers knowing how much is being collected. A breach in any part of this system can affect multiple models and users.
Connected vehicles gather location history, telematics information, infotainment activity, diagnostic logs, and even test-drive records. Over time, this builds a detailed data profile linked to both the vehicle and its driver. When stored across cloud systems or shared with external services, a breach can expose personal and operational details that many drivers do not expect their cars to hold.
A major incident involving Tata Motors exposed nearly 70TB of internal, customer, and test-drive information, highlighting the sheer volume of automotive data. In a separate case, Hyundai confirmed a breach from February in which driver data may have been accessed. Customer notifications followed internal reviews in line with regulatory disclosure requirements.
Many breaches result from misconfigured cloud storage, exposed access keys, outdated systems, or vulnerabilities in third-party networks. Modern vehicles rely on interconnected layers, telematics platforms, mobile apps, navigation tools, diagnostics, and remote-access features. While these systems enable advanced functionality, each layer is a potential entry point for attackers. As connectivity grows, so does the exposure risk.
Drivers should treat their vehicles like digital devices: update software regularly, review app permissions, remove unused paired devices, and clear stored data during servicing or resale. Automakers must strengthen encryption, secure cloud environments, improve vendor oversight, and conduct ongoing security assessments. As vehicles become increasingly connected, protecting driver data is now an essential part of overall vehicle safety. Protecting personal data on the road is as important as maintaining the asset because in today’s digital vehicles, your information is always along for the ride.
