Around 375,000 e-cars and hybrid models are now on Swiss roads, wrote the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) on Wednesday in a press release on the annual analysis of the Swiss new car market. This corresponds to eight percent of the total vehicle stock.
The market share of new registrations would be around one third by the end of 2025. According to TCS, this means that the goal of the electromobility roadmap, in which various industry players are represented, will not be achieved. This envisaged a market share of 50 percent for electric cars by the end of 2025.
The Swiss new car market had a difficult year overall and suffered a decline compared to 2024. Pure electric cars increased their market share by three percentage points to 22%. Their market share was therefore only slightly below that of petrol cars, which still had a share of 24%.
The TCS went on to say that the framework conditions for electromobility still need to be improved. Many people are hesitant to buy an electric car because the charging infrastructure is still inadequate.
Tesla is still in the lead with the Model Y as the best-selling electric car as of December 1 (3713). However, the Group had to contend with declining sales in 2025. New registrations of the Model Y in Switzerland fell by over a third in the first nine months of this year. The reasons for this include increased competition and the political activities of company boss Elon Musk.
Skoda, with its Elroq and Enyaq models, is the most successful brand in the electric segment in second and third place for "plug-in cars". The Volkswagen Group accounts for around 50 percent of electric cars sold. Volvo, Renault and BMW made it into the top 10.
The TCS based its analysis on data from the Federal Roads Office as of December 1.
