Sales of electric vehicles soared in Mayo in 2025 – westernpeople.ie

Volkswagen’s ID.4 was the best-selling electric vehicle in Ireland in 2025. 
2025 was on a landmark year for sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in Ireland.
Some 23,601 new electric cars were registered in the past 12 months, an increase of 35.1% from the 17,460 registrations seen in 2024. Crucially, sales of EVs overtook diesel cars for the first time in history – EVs now account for 18.9% of the total market compared to 17% for diesel. Petrol still remains the most popular choice at 25%.
Sales of EVs were strong in Connacht with all five counties posting double-digit increases. In Mayo, some 246 new electric vehicles were registered compared to 141 in 2024, an increase of 75%, which was one of the highest in the country. However, EVs still only account for 11% of the total number of new vehicles (2,191) registered in Mayo in 2025. 
In Galway, sales of EVs rose from 506 in 2024 to 786 in 2025, an increase of 55%, while the rate of increase was more modest in Roscommon at 27% – from 88 in 2024 to 112 in 2025. Sligo had the best performing EV market in Connacht with sales increasing by a whopping 87% – from 99 to 185, while Leitrim saw its sales increase from 32 to 44, a rise of 37.5%.
