Hybrid electric vehicles accounted for 34.4% of new car registrations in Europe in 2025, a figure that “leaves room for growth” if the European transport sector is to meet its energy transition goals.
These are the key takeaways from a report published yesterday by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). The trade body notes that hybrid electric vehicles were the most popular type of vehicle by power source among vehicles registered in the EU, European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and UK in 2025, compared to 26.1% for petrol engine vehicles and 19.5% for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
This compares to petrol vehicles leading all technologies in new vehicle registrations in 2024, with 33%, while hybrid vehicles accounted for 31.4% of new registrations, suggesting there is growing demand for hybrid vehicles in Europe, compared to petrol vehicles.
There is a similar trend for BEVs, in particular; between 2024 and 2025, the percentage of BEVs among all new car registrations increased from 15.4% to 19.5%. ACEA notes that, within the EU, 1.8 million new BEVs were registered, with the four largest markets—Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France—accounting for 62% of all BEV registrations. All four markets saw year-on-year growth in new BEV registrations, of 43.2%, 18.1%, 12.6% and 12.5%, respectively.

This growth in hybrid vehicle and BEV registrations has come as the total number of vehicle registrations has grown, year-on-year. The ACEA figures show that, in each of the last six months of 2025, there were more vehicles registered than in the same month of the previous year, and over the course of the year, the number of new EU vehicle registrations increased by 1.8% year-on-year.
March was also the top month for new vehicle registrations in both years, and these trends suggest that appetite for new vehicles continues to grow across Europe, but that buyers are beginning to move from petrol vehicles hybrids vehicles and BEVs.
The encouraging growth figures from ACEA echo similar sentiments expressed both in Europe and farther afield. Figures from New Automotive show that, in 2025, nearly one-quarter of vehicles sold in the UK were BEVs, while Australia reported more than 100,000 annual BEV sales for the first time last year.
