EVs take quarter of new car market share in October 2025 – EV Powered
These latest figures from SMMT show that EVs’ market share is the second-highest recorded in 2025. Moreover, 2025’s numbers display that the overall EV market has grown by 28.9% in 2025 with 386,224 units sold.
With just under two months to go the start of the new year, this latest data indicates that more EVs have already been registered in 2025 than throughout the whole of 2024. The SMMT cites the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant and manufacturer investment as the driving factors.
Looking towards the end of the year, the SMMT anticipates that the overall new car market for this year will exceed two million units (2,012 million) for the first time since pre-pandemic 2019. EVs are expected to take 23.3% of all cars sold – still short of the 28% target set under the ZEV Mandate.
In 2026, the new car market is predicted to reach 2,032 million units, with the outlook for EVs marked at 28.2%.
Despite this marking exceptional progress for EV adoption ahead of the UK’s 2030 ban on selling brand new petrol and diesel cars, it would still fall short of next year’s mandated targets – for 2026, one in three new cars registrations are expected to be zero emissions vehicles.
On the back of SMMT’s October 2025, Vicky Edmonds, the CEO of EVA England commented: “Continuing growth in EV sales shows that drivers are increasingly choosing electric- recognising that these cars can be cheaper and better than their petrol and diesel equivalents.
“Stronger action to support those still struggling with the purchase prices of EVs, particularly on the used EV market, and bolder moves to support those without access to home charging should lead to EVs becoming the car of choice for many households.”
In terms of motorists without home charging capabilities, several EV charge point operators (CPOs) are offering discounted rates at public chargers. Be.EV is the latest to do so, slashing charging costs to 0.39p per kilowatt hour with its new ‘Mega’ subscription package.
