Glossop residents will soon have a new, greener way to get around town, with the Enterprise Car Club launching on Saturday 31st January.

The Enterprise Car Club provides fuel-efficient cars that you can rent by the hour or the day. Members of Glossopdale Action for Sustainable Travel (GAST) have been pressing for this for over a year and are delighted it’s finally happening.
“Along with lobbying for better buses and safer cycling and walking routes, we are very keen to reduce car use, bringing down pollution and emissions, and making our town a safer place to live” said GAST campaigner Anne Robinson. “We hope that the presence of a Car Club in the town will enable some local residents to give up their car or the family's second or third car.”
Two fuel-efficient vehicles – a Mazda CX-30 and a Vauxhall Mokka – will be based in Bernard Street Car Park. Members pay an annual fee to join, then pay by the hour, plus mileage, to use a car. Booking is through a mobile app, with insurance, fuel, maintenance, MOT, and breakdown cover all included.
Joan Rutherford, another GAST campaigner, said: “I am very excited that Glossop will at last have a Car Club. I own a car but prefer to use public transport when I can. I am likely to give up my vehicle – saving on car tax, insurance and maintenance – if I can have access to a car on the rare occasions when I need one.”
One of the cars will be parked on the High Street on the afternoon of Saturday 31st January, outside the Bank/Norfolk Arms, where a member of the Enterprise team will explain how the club works and answer questions.
High Peak Borough Council is supporting the scheme, with Enterprise offering a reduced membership fee for the first year. Residents joining the Standard Annual Plan can pay just £10 (usually £60) and receive £10 free driving credit. Companies joining the scheme will also give employees free membership.
Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said:
“The Council is delighted to support the introduction of a Car Club in Glossop. Having declared a climate emergency, we are working closely with communities across the High Peak to deliver projects that benefit our environment and help tackle climate change – and this is a great example of that commitment in action.
The scheme provides visitors and residents alike with more choice and flexibility in how they travel, helping people make smarter, more sustainable journeys. I would also like to thank the GAST Group, Enterprise, and Council officers for their hard work and support in helping to bring this project about. I’m sure it will be a popular addition to the town, and I look forward to seeing people making full use of the opportunities it offers.”
Enterprise Car Club vehicles are part of a UK-wide network of over 1,300 cars and vans, accessible 24/7, 365 days a year. Reservations can be for as little as half an hour, a full day, or longer. Cars are always returned to the same bay they were collected from, meaning a parking space is always guaranteed.
All vehicles come with damage protection, third-party and passenger liability cover, and breakdown assistance. Members need only pay the damage waiver excess if an accident is deemed their fault, and the cover includes fuel, servicing, MOTs, and cleaning. Members must be 19 or over and hold a driving licence to join.
Glossop’s Enterprise Car Club is part of a wider initiative offering sustainable and cost-effective travel for both residents and businesses. Corporate accounts give employees free membership, centralised billing, and access to the full UK fleet, helping companies reduce reliance on personal vehicles for business travel.
Residents can find out more and join by visiting the Enterprise Car Club website and using the code GLOSSOP10 to claim the first-year offer – see link in comments.
