JSW ties up with Chery to launch Jetour T2 in India – Autocar India
JSW Motors Limited, JSW Group’s independent passenger mobility division, is all set to launch its first automobile in India this year, and our sources tell us the first model to arrive will be the Jetour T2 SUV. JSW has ambitions of being a carmaker in its own right, and the T2 will thus be launched independent of the company’s joint venture with MG – JSW MG Motor India. Notably, it would carry a JSW badge and model name instead of the Jetour branding. The SUV will be assembled at the brand’s upcoming greenfield manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, and it should be in showrooms by the third quarter of this year.
Pure ICE versions of the T2 are available. However, in keeping with JSW’s stated intent of concentrating on sustainable mobility, India will see the T2 i-DM arrive with its 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain. The plug-in hybrid comes with both AWD and FWD versions, though details of which one will launch here are not yet known.
The T2 is a large SUV with a traditional boxy, upright design, much akin to the Defender, and like the Defender, it too uses a monocoque construction instead of a ladder-frame setup. The T2 measures 4.7 metres in length and 2 metres in width, giving it a footprint larger than the Tata Safari, but it is a 5-seater; the 7-seat version is longer still.
Not much is known about the price and positioning the T2 will have in India. However, the FWD 5-seat T2 i-DM retails at about Rs 35 lakh in the UAE (AED 1,44,000).
Jetour is a brand launched in 2018 by Chinese carmaker Chery and is focused on SUVs, though they have marketed a few rebadged Chery hatchbacks too. Currently, Jetour operates in its home market China, global markets like the Middle East, Africa, and a few countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America.
