In 2025, the Motability Scheme announced a series of changes aimed at controlling costs and refocusing the Scheme on value and practicality. Premium brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus were removed from the car list, along with coupé and convertible body styles, while Motability set a long-term ambition for 50% of vehicles to be British-built by 2035.
Insurance arrangements were also updated, with confirmation that Insurance Premium Tax will apply to new leases from July 2026, alongside VAT being introduced on Advance Payments, increasing future lease costs. In addition, lease extension rules were tightened, with long extensions no longer routinely offered and shorter, limited extensions becoming the norm.
Motability also introduced Drive Smart, a telematics-based initiative for younger drivers to encourage safer driving and offer rewards.
