Leitrim registered the least number of new private vehicles of any county in the country last year, according to new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), despite the number nearly doubling last year.
The county saw 956 vehicles registered during 2025, which is nearly double the 2024 registrations, which came in at 517 for the year.
The drastic jump in numbers is mirrored across the country, with the number of new private electric cars licensed in 2025 rising nationwide by 36% when compared with 2024. 
The total number of new private vehicles registered in Ireland in 2025 was 192,401, 120,797 were new vehicles, while 71,604 were used imported vehicles.

The northwest was the region with the lowest number of new private car registrations, with Donegal registering 6,251, Sligo 1,953, and Roscommon accounting for 3,455. 
The share of electric vehicles (EVs) among new private cars in 2025 was 19% compared with 15% in 2024.

Dublin saw the highest number of new registrations with 70,843 vehicles registered, far outstripping the next highest, Cork, with 19,166.
Toyota was the most popular make of new private cars licensed in 2025, and the most popular brand of new electric car licensed in 2025 was Volkswagen ID.4.
