A nameplate that evokes instant nostalgia for Indian SUV lovers, the Tata Sierra has finally made its long-awaited comeback. The original Sierra from the ‘90s was iconic for its unique three-door design and unmistakable silhouette. Now, decades later, Tata Motors is reviving this legend in a modern, premium avatar, designed for 2025, yet retaining the signature character that made the first Sierra so special.
The Sierra will be offered in multiple powertrains, including petrol, diesel, and a fully electric version that will be launched soon after the ICE model. The new Sierra steps up significantly in terms of the interior and will be feature-rich, comprising both creature comforts and a long list of safety features.
The Sierra will be positioned between the Nexon and Harrier, all set to compete in the popular compact SUV segment. Certain dealerships have started taking unofficial bookings, so if you don’t want to wait for weeks or even months to get your car, then you might want to book yours as soon as possible.
The new Tata Sierra continues with an upright, boxy stance, a deliberate homage to the original’s robust proportions. However, it has been given a sleek, modern look that aligns perfectly with Tata’s latest design philosophy.
Up front, the Sierra is thoroughly contemporary. A sleek connected LED light bar runs across the nose, giving the SUV an unmistakable identity. The smoked LED headlamps sit neatly below, integrated into a bold gloss-black grille that enhances the premium quotient. The bumper design is muscular but uncluttered, with a faux skid plate that subtly reinforces the SUV’s rugged intentions. The smart-looking headlights, gloss-finished grille, and silver skid plate all combine to give it a subtle charm up front.
Its profile will take you back a few decades, thanks to the rectangular rear window that takes inspiration from the previous iteration of the Sierra. This element replicates the iconic glasshouse effect of the original Sierra, but is now executed with sharp lines and modern finishing. Tata has complemented this classic touch with flush door handles, prominent cladding, roof rails, and aerodynamic wheel designs, all contributing to a confident, tough look. The stylish SUV sports multi-spoke alloy wheels, which look unique and have a hint of sportiness. The side angle will definitely be one of its best viewing angles. Here’s how the new Sierra looks different yet similar to the older version.
At the rear, it is all about minimalism. The Sierra’s back looks clean yet stylish, dominated by a full-width LED taillight that adds visual width. A large roof spoiler completes the sporty edge, while the overall upright tail profile stays true to Sierra heritage. The result is an SUV that looks retro and futuristic at the same time. Our in-depth image gallery will give you closer look at the design details of the 2025 Sierra.
The Sierra’s EV version is expected to get subtle EV-specific changes such as a tweaked grille, slightly different bumpers, and different alloy wheels. And of course, EV badging. Tata also recently teased the production-spec Sierra EV.
Tata is yet to reveal the Sierra’s colour options, but the SUV looks really cool in the new flashy yellow shade that we have seen in teasers and reveal events of the car. Tata will be offering the Sierra in 6 colour options- Andaman Adventure (Yellow), Bengal Rouge (Red), Coorg Clouds (Silver), Munnar Mist (Green), Mintal Grey and White. Check out how the new Sierra looks like in every hue in our colours image gallery.
While the exterior focuses on nostalgia blended with ruggedness, the interior moves firmly into the future. With the new triple-screen layout, the interior looks really different from other Tata models. The three individual displays. one for the driver, one for the infotainment system, and one for the front passenger, stretch across the width of the cabin. This layout gives the Sierra one of the most advanced dashboard designs in its segment.
The driver gets to hold a four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo adds further sophistication. The dashboard gets tasteful body-coloured inserts inspired by the exterior paint choices, helping the cabin feel fresh and premium. Tata also appears to be focusing heavily on materials and ambience, with the Sierra being offered with soft-touch elements, ambient lighting, and high-quality upholstery.
The Sierra will be a 5-seater only, prioritising comfort and space over squeezing in a third row. With a wide cabin, upright glass area, and generous shoulder room, expect the Sierra to deliver a lounge-like experience at the rear, suitable for both city commutes and long highway runs. The large window glass area, combined with a panoramic sunroof, would make the cabin feel very airy and add to the sense of space.
Features
Tata Motors has earned a strong reputation for equipping its premium models with an extensive list of features, and the upcoming Sierra is expected to follow the same approach. The SUV is likely to be offered with a panoramic sunroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, and powered and ventilated front seats. One can also expect features like wireless charging, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system with a SonicSoundbar, and a fully digital instrument cluster.
Other features from the extensive list should include connected car technology, a voice assistant, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and a powered tailgate.
So in the features department, expect Tata to go all out with the upcoming Sierra.
Safety has been one of Tata’s strongest selling points in recent years, and the new Sierra is expected to reinforce that reputation. Built on the Harrier/ Safari’s robust platform, the SUV is likely to target a high Bharat NCAP rating, supported by a solid combination of passive and active safety systems. And we won’t be surprised if the SUV scores a perfect 5-star rating.
Expected equipment includes up to seven airbags, hill hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), and both front and rear parking sensors. Lower variants are expected to get a reverse parking camera, and the higher variants should come with a 360-degree camera.
Higher variants of the Sierra are likely to feature Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) with functions such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection, autonomous emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Impressive set of safety features, combined with Tata’s strong platform, should make the Sierra one of the safest and most advanced SUVs in its segment.
Under the hood, the ICE-powered Sierra is expected to be offered with two engine options. The first is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering around 170 PS and 280 Nm, which should provide strong performance for both city driving and highway cruising. This engine is likely to be available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as well as a more premium 7-speed DCT automatic option for buyers who prefer a smoother, more responsive experience.
The second option is a 1.5-litre diesel engine expected to produce approximately 118 PS and 260 Nm, a setup that should appeal to long-distance travellers who value fuel efficiency and torque-rich drivability.
With the Sierra, Tata’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will make its debut. The first-gen Sierra was known for its impressive powertrain for its time, and one can expect the new Sierra to be no less.
Shortly after the ICE model, Tata is expected to launch the Sierra EV, which will deliver an entirely electric experience. Based on Tata’s new-generation EV architecture, the Sierra EV is expected to offer multiple battery pack options, with a range of up to 500 km on a single charge.
The Sierra is expected to be offered across several variants, with prices expected to start from around Rs 15 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).
