The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella has been revealed and will mark Toyota’s foray into the competitive compact EV SUV space. It is essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti e Vitara and has the same specs and features. What differentiates it from its donor car is its styling, where it looks sleek and modern.
Toyota has had many products on offer in India since its inception, but here comes their first ever electric offering – the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella. Essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti e Vitara, the Urban Cruiser shares the platform, powertrain, interior, and features of its Maruti counterpart, and the only main difference between the two lies in the design.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella has been revealed and prices are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Unlike the e Vitara, which takes a boxy SUV approach, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella has a sharper, cleaner, and more modern face. Upfront, the highlight of the face is a gloss black strip that is placed just under the nose and runs across the width.
The headlamps are placed inside the gloss black strip, along with the sleek pixel-like LED DRLs, and the bonnet has sharp cuts and creases for a more sporty look. You also get a closed-off grille, a chunky front bumper, and faux airdams on the side.
In profile, the Urban Cruiser Ebella looks similar to the e Vitara. From this angle, while it looks small, it also looks bulky and muscular. This is thanks to the curvy design, prominent wheel arches, and thick cladding under the doors. The 18-inch alloy wheels further help it give a bold stance. Here you’ll also notice the charging flap placed on the front left fender, and the C-pillar-mounted rear door handles.
At the back, the design has been kept simple. Just like the front, the rear end also gets a black strip running across the width, and this one houses the LED tail lamps. The tailgate has been kept flat, which makes it look wider than it is, and to continue the ruggedness of the profile, the rear end gets a massive bumper.
The only major difference between the Urban Cruiser and the e Vitara is in the dimensions, as the former is 10 mm longer and 5 mm taller than the latter.
Inside, there is no design change when compared to the e Vitara. It continues with the same black and tan cabin theme and a layered dashboard that lend a premium look.
The dashboard houses a squarish steering wheel, square AC vents with brushed aluminium surrounds, and the same brushed aluminium inserts are on the doors as well. For more contrast, you get gloss black inserts in the centre console, steering wheel, and door armrests.
As far as space is concerned, it is the same as the e Vitara, since both cars have the same wheelbase and the same width. In the front, two tall passengers can sit comfortably, with good side support. However, the rear seats offer limited headroom and less underthigh support, and the width is not enough to allow three passengers to sit comfortably.
Features
In terms of features, you get a dual-screen setup with a 10.25-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 10.1-inch digital driver’s display. Other features include automatic climate control, a fixed glass roof, a JBL sound system, a wireless phone charger, and a powered driver seat.
In this article, you can see the difference in specifications between the Maruti e Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella.
In safety, it gets 7 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a 360-degree camera, and Level-2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking.
The boot space figure of the Urban Cruiser is also same as e Vitara, which is rated at 310 litres. This figure does not sound big enough considering the size and segment of the Urban Cruiser, and you’ll only be able to keep a couple of small and medium-sized trolley bags.
Since it is a rebadged e Vitara, the Urban Cruiser comes with the same powertrain setup. It will come with two battery packs, i.e. 49 kWh and 61 kWh, and both battery packs come with a single motor setup powering the front wheels. A dual-motor AWD setup is offered in the international market, but it iwill not be offered in India.
Just like the Maruti e Vitara, the Toyota Ebella offers an ARAI-claimed range of up to 543 km.
