Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is the first electric car from Toyota, which is expected to be launched soon in the compact EV SUV space. It will essentially be a rebadged version of the Maruti e Vitara and will share the specs and everything else. It is expected to be priced somewhere between Rs 18 lakh to Rs 22 lakh. It will compete against the Maruti e Vitara, the MG ZS EV, the Hyundai Creta Electric and the Tata Curvv EV.
Toyota has had many products on offer in India since its inception, but the Japanese carmaker is now gearing up to launch its first electric vehicle in the country – the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. Essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti e Vitara, the Urban Cruiser EV will share the platform, powertrain, interior, and features of its Maruti counterpart, and the only main difference between the two lies in the design.

Unlike the e Vitara, which takes a boxy SUV approach, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV has a sharper, cleaner, and more modern face. Upfront, the highlight of the face is a gloss black strip that is placed just under the nose and runs across the width.

The headlamps are placed inside the gloss black strip, along with the sleek 12-piece LED DRLs, and the bonnet has sharp cuts and creases for a more sporty look. You also get a closed-off grille, a gloss black front bumper, and faux airdams on the side.

In profile, the near-production-ready version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser shown at the Bharat Mobility Expo looks identical to the e Vitara, including the design of the alloy wheels. From this angle, while it looks small, it also looks bulky and muscular. This is thanks to the curvy design, prominent wheel arches, and thick cladding under the doors. Here you’ll also notice the charging flap placed on the front left fender, and the C-pillar-mounted rear door handles.

At the back, the design has been kept simple. Just like the front, the rear end also gets a black strip running across the width, and this one houses the LED tail lamps. The tailgate has been kept flat, which makes it look wider than it is, and to continue the ruggedness of the profile, the rear end gets a massive bumper.
The only major difference between the Urban Cruiser and the e Vitara is in the dimensions, as the former is 10 mm longer and 5 mm taller than the latter.
Inside, there is no design change when compared to the e Vitara, save for the cabin theme. It gets an all-black cabin theme, with black and grey semi-leatherette upholstery, and a layered dashboard.

The dashboard houses a squarish steering wheel, square AC vents with brushed aluminium surrounds, and the same brushed aluminium inserts are on the doors as well. For more contrast in this dark cabin, you get gloss black inserts in the centre console, steering wheel, and door armrests.

As far as space is concerned, it will be the same as the e Vitara, since both cars have the same wheelbase and the same width. In the front, two tall passengers can sit comfortably, with good side support. However, the rear seats offer limited headroom and less underthigh support, and the width is not enough to allow three passengers to sit comfortably.
Features
In terms of features, you’ll get a dual-screen setup with a 10.25-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and you’ll get a 10.1-inch digital driver’s display. Other features include automatic climate control, a fixed glass roof, a JBL sound system, a wireless phone charger, and a powered driver seat.

In this article,  you can see the difference in specifications between the Maruti e Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser.
Its safety kit is expected to get multiple airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking.

While Toyota has not revealed the boot space figure of the Urban Cruiser, we expect it to be the same as e Vitara, which gets a boot space of 310 litres. This figure does not sound big enough considering the size and segment of the Urban Cruiser, and you’ll only be able to keep a couple of small and medium-sized trolley bags.

Since it is a rebadged e Vitara, the Urban Cruiser is also expected to come with the same powertrain setup. It could offer two battery packs, i.e. 49 kWh and 61 kWh, and both battery packs will come with a single motor setup powering the front wheels. A dual-motor AWD setup is offered in the international market, but it is unlikely that it will make its way to India.
In the Maruti e Vitara, the bigger battery pack offers a WLTP claimed range of 543 km while the smaller one claims 344 km. We expect the Urban Cruiser to offer similar range figures.
