Data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that Volkswagen, for the ninth consecutive year, was the most popular choice of buying a car for the Donegal population in 2025.
CSO data also revealed that 6,251 cars were licensed for the first time in 2025, an increase of 8.8% from last year and 33.4% from 2022, when the number of cars licensed in Donegal for the first time was at its lowest amount since 2017.
Only five other counties within the country had a higher amount of cars licensed for the first time than Donegal, including Cork, Kildare, Galway, and Meath. Dublin topped the list with 70,843, whereas Leitrim had the fewest number of cars licensed for the first time in 2025, with 956.

Volkswagen was the most popular brand in Donegal, with 801 cars licensed, up by 5.3% from 2024 and 49% in 2022.
Other brands to make Donegal’s top ten list of new cars licensed in Donegal in 2025 include Toyota, Kia, Ford, BMW, Audi, Peugeot, Skoda, Hyundai, and Nissan.
Nationwide, Volkswagen was also the most popular car of choice, but Mercedes-Benz made the national top ten list, rather than Peugeot.
